Shaman
Spirit-priest — slows, buffs, DoTs, and the best HP regen buffs in the era.
Shamans are the third priest class — the spirit-walkers of the Barbarian, Troll, Ogre, Iksar, Vah Shir, and Froglok traditions. Their role spans slowing, buffing, DoTs, and emergency healing. A Shaman is often the second-most-requested party member after a Cleric.
Role
The Shaman is the slow + buff priest. Slow (Cripple line) is the defining Shaman utility — it halves a mob's attack speed, which halves the HP a tank needs to survive. Shaman DoTs (Envenomed Breath, Scourge, Plague) scale into late game and support solo play.
Key abilities
- Slow — the single most impactful group debuff in the game.
- Regeneration lines — Regrowth, Chloroplast competition, and at high levels Mortal Coil.
- Canni (Canniblize) — self-HP-for-mana conversion. The Shaman's endless-mana trick.
- Talisman lines — stat buffs for party (Talisman of the Cat, Wild Lord, Brute).
- Malo — magic resist debuff, late-game casting support.
Primary weapon paths
Shamans use blunt and piercing weapons. Spirit Totems, Warrior's Bane, and at high level the spear of Fate. Epic 1.0 is the Spear of Fate.
Group fit
Any group with a Shaman is structurally more efficient than the same group without one. The Shaman slow alone shifts tank downtime; the Shaman's buffs reduce caster mana consumption; the Shaman's Cannibalize keeps the group's mana bar afloat in long camps.
Solo
Strong. Shaman solo via slow-and-DoT: slow the mob, apply Envenomed Breath and Scourge, melee it down while regen ticks. The Shaman soloes a wider level range than Druid does indoors, though less efficiently outdoors.
Leveling path summary
- 1–15: Native city and newbie yard.
- 15–30: Blackburrow (Barbarian), Cazic Thule / Feerrott (Troll / Ogre), Lake of Ill Omen (Iksar).
- 30–45: Sol A/B, Upper Guk, Lower Guk.
- 45–60: Chardok, Karnor's Castle, Velk's. Canni-line becomes essential.
- 60–65: PoP. Malo/slow are raid-critical; Shamans rotate slow duties across raid force.
Play note
The Troll Shaman has the best racial stat spread for the class (regen + high wis). The Barbarian Shaman is a close second for group-focused play. Iksar and Ogre work fine; the new Froglok Shaman is a surprisingly strong outlier due to agility.
Patron deity
- The Tribunal — Barbarian Shamans (Halas).
- Cazic-Thule — Troll / Ogre / Iksar Shamans.
