Classes

Rogue

Sneak-and-backstab — pick locks, disarm traps, set the pace.

Rogues are the other scout class — leather-armored specialists with backstab, sneak, hide, pickpocket, and the highest sustained melee DPS against positioned targets. A well-played Rogue is the top single-target DPS in the Classic-PoP era. A poorly-played Rogue is dead.

Role

The Rogue is positional DPS and utility. Backstab requires the Rogue be behind the target — which means the tank is holding aggro and the Rogue is watching. Rogues also open locked chests, disarm traps (rarely used PvE), and pickpocket NPCs for rare drops.

Key abilities

  • Backstab — behind-the-target only, highest single-hit melee damage in era.
  • Sneak + Hide — stealth, stackable. A sneaked rogue is invisible to most mobs.
  • Pickpocket — rare drop skill; some unique items only obtainable via pickpocket.
  • Disarm Trap / Pick Lock — chest and door skills. Useful in some raid zones.
  • Assassin's Discipline / Kinesthetics — burst DPS cooldowns.
  • Evade — aggro dump.

Primary weapon paths

Rogues dual-wield piercing weapons. The Rogue epic 1.0 is Ragebringer, one of the most iconic weapons in the game. High-DPS Rogues in PoP carry Ragebringer + the Mask of the Stalker / weapon of parallel DPS.

Group fit

Rogues fit any group that needs DPS. The backstab positional requirement means Rogues do less DPS against a tank who turns the mob (back to the group); well-positioned tanks and Rogues together produce the best DPS numbers of the era.

Solo

Moderate. Rogues solo via sneak-backstab-openers and then melee. They don't have the avoidance to tank hits indefinitely. Evade dumps aggro at low HP to flee.

Leveling path summary

  • 1–15: Freeport rogue guild, or native city. Low-level pickpocket for coin.
  • 15–30: Unrest, Befallen, Najena. Dual-wield starts mattering.
  • 30–45: Sol A, Sol B, Lower Guk. Backstab progression accelerates.
  • 45–60: Chardok, Karnor's, Seb. Ragebringer questline begins.
  • 60–65: PoP DPS seat. Plane of Fire and Plane of Time rogues compete for top parse.

Play note

The Half Elf Rogue is the balanced pick. Dark Elf Rogue is stealthier (ultravision + hide). Human Rogue is the factional middle. Halfling Rogue is smaller (harder to hit from certain angles). All are viable.
